Most have a magnitude of less than 4 on the Richter scale, but the risk of an earthquake causing damage to your property is very real.

To demystify this important, yet often underestimated, form of cover, here’s what you need to know about earthquake insurance.

What is earthquake insurance?

Contrary to popular belief, a home insurance policy does not automatically cover damage caused by an earthquake. You need to add an endorsement to your policy to be protected against this type of claim.

“38 per cent of Quebecers mistakenly believe that their basic home insurance protects them against this risk, whereas in fact only 7 per cent have adequate cover. (…) Given that the risk is often misunderstood or underestimated, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has been actively working for several years to raise public awareness.” — Insurance Bureau of Canada

Les tremblements de terre peuvent causer des dommages importantEarthquakes can cause significant damage, as they directly affect the structure and foundations of homes. Furthermore, a microseism may seem harmless, but over time, an accumulation of small events can increase a building’s vulnerability.

According to Earthquakes Canada, a magnitude 4 earthquake is the threshold at which a quake can cause minor damage. This may include objects falling over inside homes, or slight cracks in the floor and walls. From a magnitude of 5 upwards, more serious damage may be caused to homes that are not designed to withstand this type of tremor.

Therefore, earthquake insurance should not be taken lightly. Seismic risks must be taken seriously in order to be prepared for any eventuality.

What are the main seismic zones in Quebec?

It is often believed that the risk of earthquakes is virtually zero in Quebec. Although major earthquakes are rare, they do occur periodically across the province.

There are three areas in Eastern Canada where the number of earthquakes is higher:

AREA

SEISMIC ACTIVITY

Western Quebec

An area covering the Ottawa Valley, from Montreal to Témiscamingue, as well as the Laurentians and Eastern Ontario.

Charlevoix/Kamouraska

The most active seismic zone in Eastern Canada. Nevertheless, large and damaging earthquakes have occurred here in the past and will inevitably occur in the future.” — Earthquakes Canada

What is covered by the earthquake rider?

The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) distinguishes between two types of damage caused by an earthquake:

Direct damage: caused by the tremor itself, this includes cracks in walls or foundations, the collapse of the building, structural deformation, etc.

Indirect damage: resulting from the event, this includes fires (caused, for example, by an electrical fault or chemicals), explosions and smoke damage.

As a general rule, indirect damage is already covered by your basic home insurance policy. However, adding an earthquake rider is essential to ensure you are covered against property damage resulting directly from seismic activity.

This rider therefore supplements your policy to protect your property and possessions, covering in particular:

Damage to your home, as well as other structures on your property (shed, garage, etc.);

Repair or replacement of damaged personal belongings;

Accommodation and living expenses if you need to be temporarily rehoused.

What is not covered by the earthquake cover

This additional cover does, however, have its limitations. The main exclusions are:

Tsunamis and tidal waves: Although they are often the result of an earthquake, damage caused by these major maritime phenomena is not covered.

Pre-existing weaknesses: Damage caused by wind, rain, hail or snow entering through openings that existed prior to the earthquake is excluded.

Water damage: Flooding, sewer backflow or damage caused by an object carried by water require the addition of a separate rider, even if they result from an earthquake.

Your vehicle: Damage to your car during an earthquake is covered under a specific clause in your motor insurance policy.

How much does earthquake insurance cost?

The cost of earthquake insurance can vary greatly depending on the insurer and various risk factors.

Unsurprisingly, it is primarily your place of residence that influences the price of this cover. This is particularly true if your property is located in a high-risk area. For example, an earthquake rider will be much more expensive in Rimouski, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, than in another, less exposed area.

Other factors taken into account are:

the age and condition of your home;

the extent of cover you require;

the excess amount you choose.

Important to note: excesses are generally higher for earthquake insurance. Although they vary considerably from one insurer to another, they are most often between 5 per cent and 15 per cent of your home insurance cover. This can amount to a substantial sum.

Is earthquake insurance really worth it?

No one is completely safe from an earthquake. If you live in a low-risk area, adding this cover to your insurance policy is unlikely to increase your premium significantly. On the other hand, if your region is more prone to tremors, taking out earthquake insurance may prove to be a wise choice to protect your property and your belongings.

At Assurances Multi-Risques, we automatically offer the earthquake rider when you shop for your home insurance. You are always free to accept it or not. It is therefore up to you to assess your risk tolerance or your financial ability to cover potential losses, especially if you live near an area of significant seismic activity.

Take the time to discuss the risks associated with earthquakes with your AMR insurance broker – they will be able to advise you!

Summary:

Earthquakes are common in Quebec.
