If you are only looking for a bargain, you may be disappointed.
Insurance premiums vary greatly from one insurance company to another, which can sometimes be surprising. Lots of people are tempted to choose the cheapest option. But as with many things in life, “less expensive” can mean “not as good.”
If you choose to shop around for pickup truck insurance on your own, be sure to compare apples to apples. Make sure that the insurance coverage and the amount of insurance that will cover your civil liability and your vehicle are the same from one insurer to another. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Civil liability: Chapter A of the insurance policy for your pickup truck
While all Quebecers are covered by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), it doesn’t cover all damages. In Quebec, it is mandatory to have at least $50,000 in civil liability insurance, which will cover you in the event that you cause physical or material damage to another person (in Canada or the United States). You need to obtain this insurance from the insurance company of your choice.
Note that insurers use information such as your age, gender, occupation and driving habits rather than the make of your pickup to determine your premium.
IMPORTANT: We always recommend a minimum of $2,000,000 in civil liability insurance. If the amount of your civil liability insurance proves to be insufficient to cover a possible lawsuit against you in the event of an at-fault accident, you will have to pay the difference yourself.
Chapter B: collision, fire, theft and vandalism
Chapter B of your car insurance policy is where the model of your pickup truck and where you live will most significantly affect your premium. The frequency of vehicle or parts theft in a given area also makes a huge difference.
Types of optional coverage available in Chapter B may include the following:
- Damage to your vehicle in the event of a collision with another vehicle and/or in the event of a rollover, even when you are at fault.
- Damage caused without a collision (including fire, hail, flooding, vandalism and vehicle theft).
- “All risk” protection: this covers all damages to your vehicle except those that are excluded in the contract (for example, rust is excluded).
- Specific risks.
Obviously, your premium will vary depending on the choices you make. Moreover, it’s best to start shopping for vehicle insurance at the same time you’re looking for the perfect pickup truck.
You can always trust an independent insurance broker to help you through the process. They will find the best insurance coverage at the best price for your pickup. They will also take the time to explain your policy and answer all your questions.
